PHOTOGENIC Photographers of Dalkey specialises in creating beautiful portraits - printed and framed by expert craftspeople - to display in your home.

Since 1991, Barry & Margaret Moore have focused on just one thing - to give their clients wonderful family portraits which capture the important people, memories and times of their lives.

Why did we choose to specialise in Portraiture?

Both Barry & Margaret hold formal photography qualifications and started their careers as photographers of commercial interiors & products, which was nice but not very rewarding personally. The pictures were very much "...here today and gone tomorrow". It wasn't long before they realised the only photographs that really mattered or were truly valued for any length of time were the portraits they created for family, for friends & for themselves.

Why should you choose PHOTOGENIC?

PHOTOGENIC have a sense of why people choose them from the years of feedback and repeat visits their clients make. Put simply, people love the quality and style of the portraits. "It's as if I can reach out and touch her face..." is what one client said about her toddler's portrait - except her toddler is now a teenager. "We always love coming for the update when a new grandchild arrives..." said another client who so far has a collection of four portraits of their growing band of grandchildren, spanning 12 years.

Some clients love that PHOTOGENIC "..don't change a thing!" and yet some say "OMG, I love all the new things you do..." Both of these things are true in equal measure.

Portraits must fulfil the desire for a beautiful portrait today and evoke wonderful memories for the future. Timeless, contemporary portraits - modern classics. If this is what you're looking for, you've come to the right place. Why not email us now and we can help you make a portrait of your own?

About Barry

Barry Moore, wedding & portrait photographer. Barry is a graduate of DIT Kevin Street, having completed the professional photography course there in 1986. His photography career started in Telecom Eireann (now Eir) where he was the company photographer until 1990 when he left to set up PHOTOGENIC.

Barry is a natural born photographer - "A genius with a camera..." is how Gay Byrne once described him but the talent doesn't stop there. His knack of both entertaining and then capturing the reactions of children make his portrait sessions more like a party. "I was once a child myself" he explains. And indeed he was - the youngest of eight and a twin.

We couldn't begin tell you all the fun things he does to get the best out of the children & families he photographs. We just hear the squeals of laughter coming from the camera room every day and see the joy in the children's faces. He makes it all seem easy - and indeed, his portraits speak for themselves.

PHOTOGENIC Weddings by Barry Moore

Until 1993, PHOTOGENIC primarily undertook wedding commissions and this is the area of photography that Barry still enjoys immensely. "I love weddings - a great day out, families & friends together, the emotion & joy and, of course, the wonderful couple who are at the centre of everything. It doesn't feel like work at all..."

Barry has won just about every award possible for his wedding and his portrait photography - including major awards from both KODAK & FUJI Film. You can visit his wedding galleries, view his portfolio and find out more about booking Barry for your wedding photography.

About Margaret

Margaret Moore (Hon) FIPPVA portrait photographer & business manager. Margaret is a graduate of DIT Kevin Street, having completed the professional photography course there in 1986. She trained in top portrait & commercial studios in Dublin before setting up PHOTOGENIC.

Margaret worked in the financial area of the travel industry in JWT and Ryanair prior to pursuing a career in photography. Her decision unleash her creative rather than her logical talents came when her late father pointed out a home truth "...you're not an accountant, you're an artist - get to it, girlie." And so, she did.

Taking inspiration from portrait images of the greats like David Bailey and Annie Liebowitz, Margaret loves to shoot simple, graphic portraits often on B&W film which is processed in the in-house darkrooms at PHOTOGENIC. From newborns & grandparents to toddlers & teens, Margaret leads her clients gently or energetically through their portrait session, with beautiful results.

As well as being a photographer with PHOTOGENIC, Margaret does look after the paperwork. She writes the newsletter (which has it's own fans, sign up for it here) and creates the events & the Limited Offers for PHOTOGENIC - including monthly Birthday Club events in support of LauraLynn House.

Outside PHOTOGENIC, between 2006-2012 Margaret had been a driving force behind the IPPVA's charity event - an annual national portrait initiative - and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Association in 2012 for this voluntary work.

Sacha organises & schedules all of our production, manages our diary, takes excellent care of our 'finishing' and knows all of our clients by their first name.

Kieron Meagher

Kieron is a graduate of DIT Kevin Street, having completed the professional photography course there in 1986. His career path took him into two of Ireland's leading colour laboratories serving professionals, where he held senior positions and was highly sought after for his expertise. He personally works on every single photograph that leaves PHOTOGENIC both through his expert B&W printing skills in our analogue darkroom and through his keen eye for detail in our colour production.

The Beginning...

PHOTOGENIC was created by Margaret & Barry Moore in January 1991. Their objective to bring a new portrait studio to the high street was realised in March 1993 when they opened their doors in Glasthule Village.

Though it's hard to imagine now, there were almost no portrait studios in south county Dublin at that time in 1991. From a standing start and long before anyone heard of the "Celtic Tiger", Margaret & Barry started in their studio displaying a beautiful black & white image of their daughter and the response to it was immediate. Black & white was not widely available for portraits or weddings back then, but their college years had given them an insight into this forgotten medium so they took the bold step and showed the kind portraits they most liked themselves in black & white and immediately set a new trend.

Very quickly the demand for their free flowing portraits & spontaneous weddings grew and they were joined in the business by many wonderful colleagues over the years. By 1998, the studio in Glasthule was outgrown and the search was on for a new home for PHOTOGENIC.

The search ended in 1999 when a brand new building was found in Dalkey. Finding the new space when the builders were still on site allowed Barry & Margaret to create a purpose fit-out and so the studio is now the most comfortable and well appointed studio of it's type in Ireland. Located opposite the DART in Dalkey, clients can avail of ample on-street parking. The amenities of Dalkey are renowned and many clients combine their visit with a stroll around the harbours, a visit to the Heritage Centre "Tudors Experience", a meal in one of the many friendly restaurants or drinks in one of the famous bars.

The studio itself is entirely on the ground floor and is both wheelchair and buggy accessible throughout.

Nothing sounds as great as your own name - especially at the end of a sentence like "...and the winner is..."

Both Barry and Margaret have collected a fair bit of crystal & silverware - for every aspect of their work. "Awards are always great to receive - it's very gratifying personally to be recognised for the work we do or for being community contributors" was all they had to say about the array of crystal adorning their studio shelves.

Some of the prizes they've picked up include both portrait and wedding awards for both Margaret & Barry from industry giants like Fuji, Kodak & Canon. Both have also received accolades for photography from the IPPVA (Irish Professional Photographers Association).

Margaret received The IPPVA's President's Award in 2007 and Honorary Fellowship & Life Membership in 2012 from the IPPVA - both are amongst her proudest achievements & recognise her voluntary, charitable work.

On an environmental & community front (which is also extremely important to the Moores) the PHOTOGENIC studio shopfront was judged the Best Shopfront in Co Dublin in 2001 by the National Tidy Towns Committee & continues to be admired and upgraded annually.
