Family Portraits for every stage of life
PHOTOGENIC is a family portrait photography studio founded in 1991 and relocated to Dalkey, Co Dublin, working exclusively from our studio there since 1999. We photograph families of every age and stage — parents with young children, multi-generational groups spanning grandparents to grandchildren, and everything in between — and we've been doing it for over three decades.
Every session takes place in our purpose-built studio, not on location. That's a deliberate choice: it gives us full control over light, backdrop and comfort, whatever the weather, and lets us focus entirely on the people in front of the camera rather than the conditions around them. Nothing you see in your finished portraits is stock or composite — every image is one we've made ourselves, of your family, in our studio.
Our two most common sessions are families with young children under 12, and larger, three-generation family groups — grandparents, parents and kids together in one sitting. Both bring their own challenges: young children need patience and a photographer who can hold their attention without forcing a smile; multi-generational groups need careful composition so that no one gets lost at the edge of the frame, and everyone looks like they belong exactly where they're standing. Thirty years of studio work means we've built a process around both.
A session with us isn't a rushed ten-minute slot. We take the time to get children settled, let personalities come through, and work through the group until we have the moments that actually look like your family — not a stiff, staged version of it. Parents tell us the biggest surprise is how relaxed the session feels once it gets going, even with toddlers or reluctant teenagers in the mix.
We're based in Dalkey in South Co.Dublin, and most of our clients come from across Dublin city and county. We also regularly photograph families travelling from Kildare and Wicklow — both well within reach for a studio session, and home to plenty of families who make the trip for a portrait session. If you're coming from further afield, we're happy to help you plan around the visit.
A studio portrait is different from a phone photo or a casual outdoor shoot — it's created to be printed, framed, kept and loved. We work with you afterwards to prepare artwork for your home, so the photographs from your session end up on your wall, not lost in a camera roll.
